The 111th Congress is now in full swing, but a handful of important Congressional seats remain undecided due to ongoing appointments by the Obama Administration. One of the most significant upcoming special elections will occur in New York’s 20th Congressional District to replace Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand. The March 31 election is shaping up to be competitive and critical for the future of small business, and the NFIB SAFE Trust has endorsed New York State Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, the proven small business candidate. Small employers are encouraged to see a proposal advanced by the Senate Minority that rejects the tax and fee increases in the Executive Budget, and instead proposes balancing the budget through cuts, agency consolidations and other efficiencies. In addition to forcing the state to live within its means, this proposal would also help New York’s economy by significantly cutting taxes for small businesses and small manufacturers.

Gov. David Paterson’s 2009-2010 executive budget proposes a sweeping expansion of the sales tax to many services previously not subject to sales tax. Please contact the governor and your legislators to let them know you oppose this proposal that will hurt your business.

In a recent fax ballot, NFIB/New York members were asked their position on Gov. David Paterson’s proposal to expand the sale of wine to grocery, drug and convenience stores. Currently, wine sales are only permitted in liquor stores. By a 2-1 margin, the membership opposed the proposal.

The 2009 session of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly is going full speed these days with over 1,000 bills crowding their calendar and many challenges confronting the state as it continues to buck the national economic downturn. NFIB/Hawaii’s annual Small Business Day at the Capitol and Legislative Reception on Jan. 27 drew a huge crowd of entrepreneurs and extensive media coverage. The event was co-sponsored by Hawaii Business magazine and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Small Business Committee. Held on the same day as the release of the 2009 Member Ballot results, NFIB/Hawaii members had the opportunity to talk directly with lawmakers on the issues vital to their survival.
